“Comparison changes the value of things… The comparisons we make when we are appraising value, where we’re trying to estimate how much we’ll like things, are not the same comparisons we’ll be making when we consume them. This problem of shifting comparisons can bedevil our attempts to make rational decisions.”—Dan Gilbert
The frontal cortex of the brain acts as an experience simulator. The Impact Bias is the tendency for the frontal cortex experience simulator to work badly.
The tendency to make you believe that the results after an experience are important and they will have influence in whether you are happy or not after the experience is over.
Studies have proven that shortly after the experience the results have no impact whatsoever in your happiness.
It means that not getting what we want can make you just as happy as getting it. Natural happiness is what occurs when we do get that thing and “synthetic happiness” occurs when you don’t.
We might think that synthetic happiness is not real or enduring and there are proves that it is the exact same than natural happiness. What happens is that your brain changes the perception of that result and make it what makes it happy.
It’s not like we settle for what we got and we convince ourselves to like it.
The brain changes and synthesizes what makes you happy after knowing that this is what you got. This is not a conscious process it’s part of the psychological immune system.
"Tis nothing good or bad. But thinking makes it so" -William Shakespeare
I paraphrased and transcribed information I found and read about this theories by Dan Gilbert. I thought of sharing and typing mostly so I can remember it all and it sinks in. This happens to me after I type or write stuff I tend to not forget so going back to the where I wrote is rarely required.
In any case I wish happiness for everyone around me, even digitally.
I rehearsed for this with our director Chuck Dauble. Shit’s getting awesome!!!!! I can’t wait until Thursday at 6pm.
Frank Hejl is one of the awesomest guys I know and I am not just saying this. He takes ideas from us, gives them a thought, really worries about them, he cares, he’s doing this from scratch and writing and re-writitng so much, goes to bed really late working teching other people’s spanks and stuff, he is broke and driven and doing awesome shit.
I am so lucky to have him as an example and inspiration of hard-working badass motherfucking cool guy. No joke. This is the type of people I like.
